Summer break is over - we meet every second Thursday
December 10 - Snowflake Book Challenge and FairTrade Fair
Where: Dobie Mall Food Court, 6:30 pm
- You have until December 10 to create something you could call a "Snowflake Book", wide open to your own interpretation. Bring it to the meeting and we will all ooh an aah, then start asking questions. The FairTrade Fair is not a gift exchange so much as a swap meet. Bring stuff you have in your collection of papers, books, tools, book cloth, leather, supplies, etc. to swap for someone's extras.
Coming up from friends
-
Priscilla Spitler, former Austin Book Worker now in New Mexico
Fall classes at Hands On Bookbinding - Wendy Hale Davis, past president of Austin Book Workers
Fall Class "Book binding" at AMOA Art School at Laguna Gloria
Want to see what we did so far? Take a look at Programs 2007 - 2009:
Helen Kwiatkowski, BookCollageBook - Collage in Book Art
- Helen Kwiatkowski, painter and book artist on the faculty at U of Mary Hardin Baylor, will lead a hands-on workshop on how she uses collage and image transfer techniques to create meaningful content and add decorative elements to pages and bindings.

Still of a table during Helen's workshop.
Book First Aid and Summer Book Show and Tell
- We shared books made over the summer and kick off the new year. There were books from the Summer UnderCoverFriends swap, Anne R. Taylor brought her haul to show.
- Book lovers need to know what to do (or not do) about dog-eared pages, tears, nasty old scotch tape, minor fixes, without making things worse. Since Dobie Mall is conveniently located across the street from the most knowledgable book conservators in the world, we got a little hands on practice from Mary Baughman.
Computer Aided Impostion
- Program TBA possibly computer aided impostion (that is not the definition of SPAM, but the order and positioning of pages in a printed signature in order to be folded to the correct page number order.)
Russell Etchners, Domy Books artists and bindings
Russell Etchner, DOMY Books owner-operator will be our guide to his collection of artists and bindings. There will be slip-cases made at last month's meeting now filled with new books.
